Varsity Soccer and Volleyball Mid-Season Update

Varsity Soccer

With just over half the season completed, the varsity soccer team is 11-2. This year our AD, Coach Milton, and Head Coach Nelson put together a very difficult non-conference schedule to go along with our NCCSA conference schedule. The team has responded well to the challenge. The difficult schedule has stretched the team to see just how good they could be.

The team is led by 12 seniors, with 11 underclassmen rounding out the roster. “I have never had such a deep team,” Coach Nelson remarked. “We are consistently playing between 15-17 players a night. I feel that many of the subs would have been starters in years past, we just happen to have a lot of good players right now.”

After losing 10-1 to Ravenscroft (currently undefeated) in the first match, the Falcons have outscored their opponents 58-16. The only other loss came to Franklin Academy (currently undefeated). Both Ravenscroft (NCISAA “AAA”) and Franklin (NCHSAA “A”) are at the top of the NC State rankings in their respective conferences.

The offense is being led by Will Moy (18G, 8A), Andrew Peterson (15G, 12A) and Tyler Nelson (6G, 16A). Riley Smith and Matthew Vicini have been contributing regularly. Goalie Andrew Garner has had a solid senior year so far registering all 11 wins. The back line is led by center backs Austin Yanez and Brandon Soemer. Contributing steadily at outside backs are Dillon Hughes, Camden Brochu, Christian Earp and Caleb Soemer. The two holding midfielders that have been playing at a great level are Ethan Meng and Austin DeAngelo.

“I am thrilled with what we are trying to accomplish. The boys have bought into working hard every practice and game. We made our motto, ‘Earn It,’ and I believe they are trying to do just that. I don’t believe they are satisfied yet,” Coach Nelson states. “I truly am just as proud of the subs when they come in as I am with the starters. This team is a fun team to coach and to watch.”

The rest of the team players are Cody Jeans, Aaron Walker, Ngyuen Do, Daniel Elston, JW Brinson, Scotty Simmons, Chase Gunter, Donavan Stell and Garrett Huskey.

Varsity Volleyball

The Lady Falcons volleyball team has had a great start to the season with an 8-4 overall record.  Three of the losses were to top ranked non-conference teams and the other loss was  to Wilmington Christian who is ranked number one in our conference.

The team is led by four seniors who have played together since sixth grade.  Hannah Braswell, Charity Hemric, Bayley King, and Peyton Pedder have used their leadership abilities to lead the team both on and off the court and have helped bring unity to the team.  The six juniors and one sophomore have also played for several years and add depth to the team.  Heather Green leads the team with 95 kills followed by Brandie Ragsdale with 89 and Tiffany Green with 85.  Ashleigh Murr, Courtney Secrist, and Ashlyn Moran are key to the team’s solid defense.  Tori Hall is a great asset coming off the bench as the third middle blocker.

“All in for Him” is the team motto as they strive to do all to bring glory to Christ.  “Start strong,” “next point,” and “focus” are key phrases that keep the players going during a match.  Their strong work ethic and desire to play their best have helped them be successful, even against some tough opponents.  “I am so thrilled to be able to coach such a great group of girls who play with all their heart.  Their love for the game and each other is evident in all they do,” states Coach Braswell.
