Surgery in Second Grade

Our elementary classes enjoy hands-on activities throughout the year to aid them in their learning. Recently, our second grade class had a blast performing word surgery! They made sure to wear protective masks and gloves as they cut out letters and used apostrophe Band-Aids to put their “patients” back together.

The second graders were able to take two words a apart, cut out the extra letters, then bandage them back up in contraction form. When asked why it was fun, one student said, “Because we got to do surgery on words.”

Surgery on words – that does make contractions more enjoyable doesn’t it? Feel free to try this kind of surgery at home!
