SECOND GRADE

BIBLE: A Servant's Heart (Bob Jones Press)

Through Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments and application activities, second grade students are faced with their need to accept Christ as Savior, and they learn how to share this need with others. Bible stories demonstrate God's dealing with His people and His dealings with His children today. Studies of the heroes of the faith provide students with role models who dedicated themselves to Christ. Weekly Scripture memory verses encourage students to put on the whole armor of God and apply Bible knowledge to their daily lives. As second graders learn more about the Word of God, they learn more about God Himself.

MATHEMATICS: Arithmetic 2 (A Beka Book)

In second grade mathematics students are taught to see that the addition and multiplication tables are part of the truth and order that God has built into reality. They learn to go from the concrete to the abstract. Teaching is supplemented with daily speed drills, class work participation exercises, story problem solving, and independent homework assignments. The students are tested weekly to ensure their comprehension of new material. They learn that mathematics directly points to the God of order.

READING: If Skies Be Blue; When the Sun Rides High (Bob Jones Press)

Second grade students are exposed to a variety of reading selections in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The stories are taught to encourage individual thinking in making predictions, interpreting attitudes and motives of characters, and recalling story elements. Students apply phonics rules to sound out unfamiliar words. Reading and discussion are conducted both in small groups and on a whole class level. Daily workbook pages provide extra assessment of comprehension and review of phonics rules.

PHONICS: Letters and Sounds (A Beka Book)

Students are taught phonics through charts, worksheets, games, and daily drills. The chart method of learning helps the students quickly read a word by using the various rules associated with phonics. They become more confident in their reading and thus more interested in the written word. Each week their spelling word list directly relates to the new phonics rule to which they have been introduced. This method enhances students' comprehension of the words.

ENGLISH: English 2 for Christian Schools (BJU Press)

Second grade students learn sentence structure, parts of speech, and their use in a variety of writing assignments. They complete projects from friendly letters to book reports and are encouraged in proper listening skills and reference skills (using a dictionary, thesaurus, and library). The aim of this class is to produce students who have a solid foundation for speaking and writing the English language in whatever capacity God may choose.

WRITING: Writing with Phonics (A Beka Book)

Cursive writing is taught utilizing daily practice worksheets, individual whiteboard activities, and class participation exercises. Dictated sentences help students to establish quick and thoughtful writing practices. Students are encouraged to see the beauty and art of the written word and how this practice, though different for all peoples, gave us the method of introducing people around the world to the written Word of God.

SPELLING: Spelling 2 (A Beka Book)

Second grade students benefit from learning words related to their phonics studies because this method enables their reading to become more fluid and smooth. Spelling lists are taught through classroom practice, games, and drills. Students learn the importance of neat, proper formation and writing of the words. This skill enhances their ability to communicate the Word of God more effectively.

HISTORY: Our America 2 (A Beka Book)

Students are introduced to the true historical account of our wonderful country's beginning. They are encouraged to identify special facts or vocabulary words in their textbooks. Worksheets help ensure students' comprehension of topics discussed. Most importantly, students are shown how the development of Our America was only possible because of God's direct blessing upon this great land.

SCIENCE: God's World Science 2 (A Beka Book)

Students are introduced to God's world and the unique reasoning behind each created being. Children learn to understand of their world through hands on study with insects and animal life. Students participate in whole class reading time. They are taught to identify vocabulary words and special facts. Field trips are also used to reinforce classroom topics.
