Showers of Blessing

9/20/2024

Growing up in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in my dad’s church (New Testament Baptist Church), we sang a lot of hymns.  A typical teen, I grew tired of singing them over and over; now, however, I feel a deep connection to the Lord and His truth every time I sing or hear them again.showers of blessing happy girl with umbrella

(As an aside, music is powerful. I would encourage each of you to be aware of and cautious about what you allow your children to pump into their brains on a daily basis. It will have an impact for either the spirit or the flesh.)

One of those wonderful hymns was “There Shall Be Showers of Blessing”.  Here are the lyrics

There shall be showers of blessing:
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.

Refrain:
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy-drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.

There shall be showers of blessing,
Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys,
Sound of abundance of rain.

There shall be showers of blessing;
Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing,
Come, and now honor Thy Word.

There shall be showers of blessing:
Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call!

There shall be showers of blessing,
If we but trust and obey;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
If we let God have His way.

Notice the last verse: If we but trust and obey; and If we let God have His way. The conditions for God’s blessings are trusting and obeying His word.

We have been enjoying the blessing of rain showers this week, but I also heard some complaints about the rain. If we lived in some parts of the world, we would be outside dancing in and rejoicing in the blessing of the rain.

Similarly, one of life’s great tragedies is that those who are greatly blessed, tend to take those blessings for granted. Those who live in difficulty tend not to overlook blessings when they come.

Let’s focus our hearts on trusting and obeying His word and rejoicing in God’s showers of blessing in our lives.
