A Very Present Help
shareOctober 4, 2024
One of the tropes often used in Hollywood action movies is to have one or more characters, often the hero or heroine, in or outside of a battle or major conflict.
Behind them or around them, a vehicle or a building explodes in a massive fiery explosion with debris and flames all around them while they are seen slowly and confidently walking away seemingly unaffected by the obvious destruction and danger all around them.
Of course, like all of Hollywood, their exuded confidence is fake. In reality, like most of us, they would duck and cover and run screaming away.
During the recent flooding out west of us, many found themselves without any help — alone and stranded with rescuers doing all they could, but with so many needing help themselves, unable to reach them.
What a terrible feeling it must be to be trapped and hopeless in the middle of such a great tragedy!
In Psalm 46, we are given a short but beautiful reminder of the true confidence and the present help and hope we can have as God’s people.
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
Psalm 29 also reminds us:
3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the Lord is upon many waters.
10 The Lord sitteth upon the flood; yea, the Lord sitteth King for ever.
11 The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.
The Christian’s unmoveableness and unshakeableness are very much real and should be one the key markers in our lives — the very evidence of our relationship with God.
While our lives may be upended, our souls shouldn’t be.
And so, we weep and pray with those whose lives are torn apart and also rejoice in the truths that the LORD sitteth King for ever and He will bless His people with peace.
