To Be a Disciple…
sharePosted 4/28/2024
Who are we being discipled by?
Disciple can be defined this way: “a follower or student of a teacher, leader, or philosopher.”
Our world is full of teachers, leaders, and philosophers in many different mediums.
Many of us are active disciples of podcasts, personalities, politicians, and performers. So many who are paid to entertain and present someone else’s words as their own and convince us that they believe what they are saying.
In John 8:31, Jesus defined what it means to be His disciple.
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;”
Notice that Jesus was speaking to believers. Just accepting Christ does not make us a disciple of His.
Many believed; fewer followed.
To be His disciple, there is one ingredient – continue in His word. Abide, dwell, live in, live by, follow, constant – continue.
How often do we find ourselves IN the word of God?
Standing on the beach enjoying the sound of the waves crashing is not the same as being in the water. When we are in it, it will be in us, soaking us, and dripping off of us. Even when we leave it and return to the beach, we will still carry the effects of it with us for a time. We will need to return to it often to continue in it.
Recently, many have become ardent disciples of Taylor Swift. Over half of U.S. adults according to polls. They continue in her words.
We become disciples by developing habits, and the habits of our hearts define us.
Read this article by Jay King who became aware of and convicted about his heart habit for video games.
As long as we are continuing in anything besides God’s word, Satan is content.
With the weekend ahead and the summer looming, what will we choose to continue in? If it’s not in His Word, then we cannot call ourselves His disciples.
