Five Scripture Prayers for the School Year

Sept. 2, 2024

Freshly sharpened pencils, shiny new sneakers, and nervous anticipation are hallmarks of a new school year. Students reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and bound into class with their favorite teacher. They’ll work hard together on the field or court, in music, in the classroom, and on the playground.

As parents, we naturally want our children to thrive academically, socially, and spiritually — but let’s remember to order our prayers around God’s priorities for our kids. As the hallways buzz with activity, we can use these scripture passages to guide our prayers for the new school year.

Let my child know you are with them.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10

“And, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20b

Help my child be teachable.

Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments. Psalm 119:66

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7

Guide my child to find good friends and be a good friend.

A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. Proverbs 27:17

Give my child a humble servant’s heart for your glory.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:16

Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you. Matthew 20:28

Guide teachers in wisdom, perseverance, and compassion.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:58

Finally, let’s express gratitude in our prayers and our homes for Friendship Christian School and their mission to teach a biblical worldview for students to learn about Christ, love like Christ, and serve like Christ.
